In the case of drainage problems, be sure to address the essentials first before you consider drainage systems. Clean your roof gutter and make sure that it runs around your house while ensuring that the downspout is at least 3 feet off the ground. A slope down and away from your house should have at least 6 inches of downward slope for every 10 feet of horizontal distance. You should avoid allowing water to pool or funnel toward your house on hard surfaces such as a sidewalk or driveway. Our Winter Garden Foundation Repair experts are here to help you if you have any questions, concerns, or problems regarding the drainage of your property or with your foundation.

Catch Basins

In low spots, surface water collects in catch basins under sinks. In the surface drainage system, the water is channeled into a drain that runs below the ground and connects to the surface drainage pipe. Debris is kept out of the catch basins by grates that prevent debris from entering the catch basins and clogging the drain pipes. Drains in the pipe slope downward so that water flows to the street drainage system and other acceptable drainage points.

French Drains

The purpose of French drains is to collect this subsurface water flow before it reaches your foundation. There are two types of French drains: covered and unlined. A covered trench has a flexible filter fabric over a perforated PVC pipe and is situated at its bottom. The rest of the trench is filled in with gravel to about one foot below the surface. A filter cloth is laid in the trench, a layer of gravel is placed on top, and the remaining soil in the trench is filled in. After the grass has been planted, the soil is then packed down.
